Rumors have been boiling that VMware would have Site Recovery Manager (SRM) modules for vSphere in 2H 2009. Well they are true now. Here is the link from VMware's web site confirming the release ( http://bit.ly/3lT0dW ). And of course, EMC is the first to tout it's available SRA's that are supported by their entire storage replication suite. (SRA is the component that allows the storage replication talk with the vCenter management console). EMC also offers "auto-failback" when the disaster is resolved ( more info on all the other EMC ways to support SRM click here ). This is important to make sure your infrastructure can send all your operations back to you seamlessly, if you are protecting them off site.
Something else that is new, which Chad Sakac and EMC's Celerra team will like is the new SRM will have support for NFS as well. Previously, all storage had to be connected via FC or iSCSI. When I worked at EMC, I personally had customers (including myself) asking for this design capability, because sometimes VMware on NFS connectivity can be the best solution. I am so glad I have the tools & formulas to help people mathematically measure when each connection type is appropriate.
If you have questions about any of this please email or contact me. I can help walk you through the details -or my engineers and I at my new company (new web site soon to be released) will guide you thru the process and do your heavy lifting. (We have 3 replicating data centers and operate on all of VMware's platforms internally ourselves and for our clients who find it cost effective for us to do it for them).
