Happy New Years. I just cannot get over how impacting ‘on-line backup’ can be to people and organizations. I’ve been working with customers in the Midwestern states of North America for the last 6 months using various methods. We have designed some clever and rock solid methods that range from data de-duplication to bandwidth optimization to traditional backup strategies. I’ve also been using these on my own personal PC and handheld for several months –before we announce our public release. Today, I was talking with a dear friend of mine in another industry –and he asks, “So can you please tell me again what it is that your company does?” I kept saying to myself… “do not use ANY technical words. Just show him.”
We walked over to his office from the hallway. Pulled up a web browser on his PC. I logged into my company’s “on line” backup web site. We restored a couple pictures and contacts to his desktop in a matter of seconds.
He pulls them up, and says… “This is impressive. And you can back up my email, contacts, files too?” Answer… Yes. “Can I restore my data to any computer?” Answer… Yes. “Does anyone else have access to my data?” Answer… No. “Where do I sign up?”
He went on to share with me about the years of work he would lose –and the associated costs involved, if he were to ever lose his PC, or if it crashed. I explained... then that is a good estimate of how much your digital assets are worth today. My online backups are your insurance policy to stay in business when you need a copy of your data the most.
I love my job. I love my solutions. I use them myself. My company uses our own solutions for our own needs. I cannot think of a more exciting way to personally make a positive impact on other people and enable their ability to remain focused on their own business and life. Have you tried on-line backups? What are the best and/or worst things you see in this technology?
Yes, I agree that online backup is a super cool technology. This industry is growing rapidly.
I recently Googled, "Online Backup Review" and got a great website:
http://www.BackupReview.info
The site ranks the top 75 online backup companies on a monthly basis.

Jonas,
Than you for sharing. I really like the effort Backup Review takes to identify categories that would be important on selecting the right solution for online backup.
I see too many offerings advertised (and reviewed) that appear to me –as poor attempts to even distinguish between backups, archives, and even mere data storage. This in my opinion hurts the eco system of “online backup” when some of the “experts” cannot even decipher technology differences in the industry and science of data storage. At first glance I do like Backup Review’s mindset and criteria mentioned. They appear to be looking at the right things. I cannot wait to see our products reviewed after the launch.
Respectfully (and thanks again!),
Steve
